The Shrinking Religion of Europe

BBC News Channel (and BBC Worldwide) is showing Robert Pigott's report on Catholicism and Lutheranism and Protestantism in general in steep and even active decline in northern Europe, and looks at the Don Cupitt style theology resulting in the Netherlands. The programme is called Europe's Christian Exodus. Do also see my previous posting on Klaas Hendrikse.

This was a good documentary, although a little lightweight. Interesting to see that there's a 'confirmation culture' in Finland. I suppose this means that these children know at least a bit about Christianity, and are not so fearful and ignorant about the environment of a church building. In England, both of these things would be a problem for young people.

It was interesting to see the Christian atheists, so to speak, in their Dutch church. The set-up looked thoroughly traditional, despite their highly liberal beliefs. The church in the theatre seemed more appealing, from my point of view, as well as the German house church.

It would be great if there were a series on this subject, because this one programme couldn't really go into any depth.
